Sorry for the SO long reply. I somehow overlooked your message. The difference is the level of details or micro contrast. When you make a double tone mapped image, things go quite crazy, and you have to turn dial it back a bit, otherwise it gets too extreme. But you can get this painterly look. Just wanted to say I just found this site the other day and I love the detail you put into your posts explaining how things are done. Beautiful images also, not HDRish, but pulling the hidden detail out.
